With this first post we are glad to welcome you on UC Trevigiani new website. Our team has accompanied the history of our country for 105 years.
The race of one of the oldest sports clubs in Italy continues on the web and on the roads between tradition and novelty. With over 500 wins, including two world championships thanks to Francesco Chicchi (Zolder 2002, under 23 road) and Enrico Franzoi (Monopoli 2003, under 23 cyclocross) and three Giro d’Italia conquered by Roberto Sgambelluri (1996), Raffaele Ferrara (2000) and Mattia Cattaneo (2011) marked the career and life of many sport men.
Everything started on a cold Sunday in December at the start of a Cycle Camp in Castelfranco Veneto when Lazzaro Bortoletto, Giovanni Garatti and Francesco Zanchetta presented themselves unlicensed at departure. «Which company do you represent?» was asked by the organizers. «Trevigian Cyclists Union» Zanchetta answered. They wore a black shirt, with U.C.T. written on the front.
More than a century has passed since this episode, during which UC Trevigiani became a symbol of the national pedal, so that in 1967 it received the highest recognition that a sport company can aspire to: the Golden Star for Sport’s Worth conferred by Italian National Olympic Committee for the many merits gained in the great panorama of national cycling activity.
Ten presidents (Antonio Pagnin, Ugo Marcati, Enrico Brunelli, Giuseppe e Carlo Garbuio, Carlo Amadio, Giuseppe Varetton, Narciso Sfoggia, Giovanni Pinarello e Remo Mosole) and a commissioner (Luigi Manganotto) have succeeded before the current number one of the board of directors, Renato Ettore Barzi, who in 2014 had the honor in Rome to retire from the hands of Italy Council President, Matteo Renzi, the Gold Collar, CONI’s greatest sporting honor.
Together with Mirko Rossato, who has been leading the team since 2006, Barzi has in recent seasons lifted the pace of the team’s competitive activity, making it to the Continental category. The new technical project aims at the growth and maturation of young talents, to prepare them for the great jump in the World Tour professional cycling. UC Trevigiani riders run around the world with amateurs and pros in international races.
Despite the high quality of the opponents, the achievements and victories continue to be copious. Looking at the last few years, we must remember the participation in the Worlds Team Time Trial Championships in 2014 in Ponferrada (Spain), won thanks to the first place in the UCI Europe Tour ranking, the 100th edition of the “home” race Popolarissima with Rino Gasparrini, the yellow jersey won by Simone Petilli in Ronde de l’Isard stage race in 2015 and, in the same season, Lucas Gaday’s winning sprint at Gran Premio della Liberazione in Rome.
The list of champions who have carved the history of this prestigious team is very long. The best known are the “heroic” Antonio Bevilacqua, Giovanni Pinarello, Aurelio Cestari, Pietro Zoppas, Narciso Sfoggia up to today stars including Alessandro Ballan and Franco Pellizotti, but countless are the riders who came to the highest category after they accumulated experience with the blue mesh with a white and black band that became the ideal springboard for professional launch.
In addition to road, track and cyclocross, this long trail also has a chapter dedicated to history and art since the team from the 1980s has its headquarter in Porta San Tomaso, part of the city’s charming city walls. Ever since the athletes were running with woolen knitwear, so much has changed, not the passion of UC Trevigiani executives and athletes. Now the future is in the hands of an elite and under 23 team formed by riders from all over the world who will have to do their best to keep up the name of a team with a unique and inimitable history.
